2025 is finally here and we are beyond excited to announce two incredible new additions to the LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2025 line-up – Lauren Thompson and Matt Bigg!

Lauren Thompson: A Fierce Selectress with Unmatched Energy

Hailing from East London, Lauren Thompson has been making waves in the music scene for over a decade. Known for her fierce selections and re-editing skills, Lauren has her roots deeply embedded in RnB, Soul, Disco, House, and Garage. She has graced stages at top events like Groove Odyssey, Lovebox, Wilderness, and Spoony’s Garage Weekender, and her name has been popping up all over the place, including at LIQUID SPIRIT London.

Lauren’s electrifying sets have warmed up for music legends such as Moodena, Dave Lee, and Art of Tones, and she’s also a regular host on House FM every Wednesday from 2-4pm. We’re beyond thrilled to have her join us at LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2025, where she’s sure to bring her signature style and energy to the dance floor. Matt Bigg: The Return of the Margate Soul Festival Legend

Sound the horns! The triumphant return of Matt Bigg, the Margate Soul Festival and radio veteran, is playing at LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2025! After stealing our hearts with his unforgettable sets last year, Matt is back to ignite the dance floor once again. His dynamic performances blend Hip Hop, RnB, Neo Soul, Funk, and a whole lot of fun, making every moment unforgettable.

As a true musical virtuoso, Matt has earned his reputation through years of experience, both on the airwaves and on the live event scene. Let's take you back in time. A Time when LSG2024 was coming to an end and all would gather at the Main Stage for our Villa Finale spectacular.

The Villa doors were wide open and guests had started to trickle through its grand gates, up the stone stairs, across the pool and up once again, to the wide open deck. The sky had started to turn orange and as the sun dipped below the horizon and the moon took its place over Gozo Terry Jones took to the decks, ready to deliver his extra special SUN SET.

This was a journey into sound. A golden hour soundtrack that will no doubt etch itself into Liquid Spirit Gozo’s heritage.

"I just want to say a personal thank you to everyone who came to the incredible LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2024 and helped me celebrate 55 years of DJing. Andrea and Danny have created a unique late summer jewel on the beautiful Mediterranean Island of Gozo, to which we are all invited.

As a result of their vision, incredible organisation and marketing skills, attention to detail and consideration for all who attend, everyone was able to experience an idyllic long weekend which made us feel truly special. Their amazing teams for whom nothing is too much trouble, the oh - so - talented hand-picked DJs from across the black music spectrum who entertained us all weekend, it was a pleasure to share the stages with all of you. To the hundreds of wonderful, like-minded people who make this brilliant party what it is, for without you, there wouldn't be a LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo.

As you all know, Andrea and Danny asked me to create a quintessential sunset piece. the likes of which have been so memorable in Ibiza for many decades. The aim using the sun is going down as the time for reflection, remembering those dear to us during the calm and tranquillity of a golden sunset, to the evolution of a new and brighter day, which would be uplifting and dancing us into the nighttime finale.

It was, for me and many, a spiritual experience and very emotional. So, as a small token of my gratitude, I've recorded the peace for you to keep as a memory of this wonderful long weekend. Hopefully, from the emotional beginning to the truly uplifting second part, you will all enjoy the journey with me to the end.

1. Joe Cox and DJ Precious Back To Back At ABOVE

Many of our wonderful LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2024 fam piled up on the roof at ABOVE in Xlendi on the Saturday afternoon.

ABOVE is part of the dream trio alongside FRONT (Bar and Restaurant) and BLOCK (one of our official accommodation partners). This place had everything we needed to drum up some electric energy. Pool, cocktail bar, tasty snacks and a rocking sound system for our rooftop DJ dream team; Joe Cox, DJ Precious, Enyay and Lucie Amber.

Whoah! The VIBES that were coming off our socials were immense!

The impromptu back to back from Joe and Precious, has been talked about more than Daisy Dukes denims. Thankfully, there is no roof at ABOVE as it would've been well and truly been blown OFF.

1. Soul Food #2 Pop Up at Fliegu Bar & Restaurant

One of the very special things at LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo, is our Popups. Every year, we aim to bring something new to experience on Gozo, mixing music with local venues, culture and food.

What is not to love?!

Soul Food has become a staple and a welcome addition to the LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo itinerary, offering ticket holders the opportunity to wind down, sample local Gozitan food at a respected local foodie destination whilst listening to soulful sounds through the eras.

At LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2024, we dedicated the event to Terry Jones, in celebration of his formidable 55 year career as a DJ. This emotional and uplifting event, coupled with the news of Frankie Beverly passing, meant there was not a dry eye in the house.

Thank you to all the DJs and the staff at the lovely Fliegu for working so hard to make this vision a reality.

Unforgettable forever memories.

1. David Bailey's Villa Main Stage Set

Something happens when David Bailey takes to the decks. We fly. Yes, it's not just his hair that does that.

This slick, purveyor of "feel-good" house music, delivers emotional depth without sacrificing energy. The stuff of legend across London's underground circuit and a staple for LSG2023 and 2024, he has a sharp ear for quality tracks, whether its creating or playing, and that, paired with an ability to read the room, means no two sets are ever the same, but each is guaranteed to leave you with a lingering high.

Dropping the likes of Ron Trent, Dezarey Dawn, and his Underground Project smash, You Don't Know with Miss Fly, we were whipped into a fun-loving, free-spirited frenzy - all for the love of House.

All Hail King David!

1. Danny T's Selector Set At The Villa

   

   For those that believe that Danny T is all about House. Think again. LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2024 saw him dusting off some much-loved Rare Groove and Acid Jazz for a set under the trees, and it was truly 'one of those moments'. Everything aligned—the music, the atmosphere, and the crowd's energy. His selection, blended classics with some lesser known treats and kept us dancing for a solid hour. Danny demonstrated deep knowledge of the genre's and reminded us of days gone by.

   There was a unique energy in the air around that stage, plus a good old breeze blowing which helped the sweat and whipped us up into a frenzy. These magical moments can't be written about really. They can't be seen in a photo, nor witnessed through film. A magic that is only ever achieved when a DJ is in perfect harmony with the crowd in the moment. And what a moment that was!

1. The Sun - Set With Terry Jones

   Capturing pure magic at the LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo 2024 Villa Finale was our man of the hour, Terry Jones who took to the stage for our extra special Sun Set. He guided us through an unforgettable musical journey that was emotional, uplifting and damn iconic. It still gives us goosebumps. As the sun went down, Terrys choices weaved from Frankies, 'Golden Time Of Day' to Stevies, 'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life' into the likes of Ray Charles and Jose Feliciano..and even a no-holes-barred version of Nessun Dorma, by his favourite singer, Aretha Franklin. As the moon rose, his selections did too, moving gently into Soulful House as only Terry can. Gracing the air with the sonic sounds of Black Coffee, Darryl D'Bonneau and more. It was one of those sets that put everyone in the audience in their own skin. He delivered moments for the individual. And those individuals were together. A career-defining moment, which happened at the right time with the right man.

1. Marie Garaccio's Discotastic Main Stage La Grotta Moment

There ain't a stage big enough for the Disco Queen that is, Marie Garaccio. This lady exudes deity. Not only is she a DJ with one of the best collections of Disco records out there, but a performer, entertainer and connector of hearts.

Sparkling, glistening, big, disco-loving hearts at that.

Knocking out hits like Art Of Tones (LSG2025 Headliner no-less!), The Boss and No One Gets The Prize, alongside Reflex Revisions and her Disco Brother and fellow LSG2024 DJ, Young Pulse, who happened to follow in her lightning footsteps that night.

This Siren sourcerer draws you in, and flops you about until you catch her contagious 'queen energy'. Now, we may feel like we are Gods gift during one of her sets, but she is the real deal.

Marie. We love you.

1. Abi Clarke's Selector Set at La Grotta

The Selector Stages, situated amidst Xlendi Cliffs and Under The Trees are tucked away in exclusive nooks, down stairways of gold, and surrounded by bursts of colour and canopies of green.

Incredible Selectors created worlds of their own and guided us on journey's through Lovers Rock, Jazz, Latin, Boogie, Disco, Rare Groove, Balearic, Funked Up Brakes, HipHop, and RnB.

Endless views, boundless freedom, and a sanctuary for the untamed.

This is where music, naturality, simplicity and joy are inseperable and freedom presides.

Abi created a roadblock at La Grotta. We were at one, adjascent to the sea, like the sea. Leaning, wavy, smiling, uniting.

1. Young Pulse Dropping Some NYC Disco At La Grotta

Listen, when ANYONE drops Louie Vega you got a captive audience! When Young Pulse drops the Bebe Winans track remixed by Mr Vega, the crowd will JUMP.

And that we did. In fact, we jumped for a solid hour while the maestro took to the decks at La Grotta.

Young Pulse is a man of many talents and his infectious energy is a damn right USP!

When you are in, you are ALL IN.

   The Best Of British House Boat has always been a sellout and for LSG2024 this lot were the reason why (captions please).

   

   The Journey Men, Sy Sez, David Bailey and (Sir) Neil Pierce held a captive crowd (quite literally) aboard The Hera II, whilst they sailed around the crystal clear waters of Gozo and Comino and The Blue Lagoon. Hands were raised and arms held wide with the warm summer breeze and some braved the plank and went for a swim.

   And why not?

   Whispers on the boat and amongst the DJs ANd crowd for the rest of the weekend, were simply 'It's highly unlikely that this exact situation would ever happen again.'

Malta is a well-connected island from all over the world. You fly to Malta International Airport (MLA).  Once you land in Malta you have the option of two ferry services to get to the Island of Gozo. Summer schedules for both ferries are published in June.

Gozo Travel Information: Getting From Malta To Gozo

Gozo Highspeed Ferry

From Malta International Airport take a bus or grab a cab to the Lascaris Wharf Terminal in the Grand Harbour in Valletta which is approximately 10 minutes from the airport by car or up to 30 minutes by bus. You can either grab the next fast ferry that arrives or alternatively, book online ahead of time and spend some time in the beautiful town of Valletta before you board.

Gozo Channel Ferry

The iconic Gozo Channel Ferry carries both foot passengers and vehicles and operates 24-7 (weather dependent). From the airport take the X1 bus, grab a cab or hire a car and drive approx 40 minutes to Ċirkewwa Ferry Port north of Malta. Ferries run to schedule and you only pay when you leave Gozo

Gozo Island boasts hundreds of caves dotted around the coastline and inland. One of the most famous is the Xerri's Grotto, located in the village of Xaghra. This underground marvel was discovered by accident in the 1920s, revealing stunning stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. As Gozo beckons exploration, it's hot and there will be LOTS of dancing, bring light and comfortable footwear. Sliders or flip-flops are essential as are comfortable trainers and dancing shoes at night.

We’re sitting in The Royal Standard in SE3, the boozer that plays host to Terry and Abi’s It Takes Two. It’s a blowy Thursday afternoon and as we sip a Mojito kindly offered by host Caroline who happened to be cocktail training, we prepare to open a can of wonderous worms that comprise the illustrious DJ career of Terry Jones.

“Where shall we start?” He smiles. “And how long have you got?!” From Aretha to Opolopo, this maestro of the turntables possesses musical acumen spanning an impressive five decades, and you can hear every inch of those years through the musical choices in his sets. They are moving,  uplifting, and educational and guaranteed to ensure everyone leaves lighter and brighter than when they arrived.

ERA FIRMA

“I was selling records in London and a guy called Terry Angel who had the Seabright asked me to come and play some music in his pub on a Tuesday night. The rest is history.” Terry smiles.

He quietly, and humbly built his style around the music that moved him. “Back into the 60s and the civil rights movement, the struggle was oozing out of the records from Detroit and through the artists I love. Aretha, Nina Simone, you name it, if it was preachy, it found a way into my set!”.

With a 25-year residency at the legendary Southport Weekender, all the Suncebeats and LDFs, under his belt, and an incredible 21 years at The Norfolk Village, there’s no doubt Terry's sets are always eagerly anticipated. Throughout his career he has hosted Come On Over and Back To The Village, his legendary Village Soul residency at Newcastle's vibrant Hoochie Coochie and Suite Soul in Scotland which continues to draw crowds. He has been a long-serving pub landlord, played host to superstars, Odyssey and stunned George Michael (all stories and more were shared in our candid interview with Terry found on the LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo Reels). And back In 2003, Terry curated a compilation album, Soul Togetherness Presents Village Soul, and its sequel (2008) Village Soul Two, which both earned equal acclaim. Released through Expansion Records it is still a must-have for aficionados.

Norman Jay was recently chatting about the late sixties on his Soho Radio show. He recalled Terry being the only other DJ representing the soul scene in London at that time. Pioneers of the soul scene they birthed and nurtured the community that began around Shoreditch and expanded across the country over the years to come. No doubt they have both seen untold changes. Nowadays, sticks have replaced the record box. The arms are less pumped,  but the sets can go anywhere. The eras moved on and so did Terry but with his feet firmly on the ground.

Guardian Of The Groove

Terry has a presence most would die for. Subtle, strong and joyful. He wipes the floor with the old paradigm ‘boys club’ and leads with authenticity, heart and consistency and his fans feel that at every gig. “Me being gay definitely influenced my style. When I wasn’t out on the gay scene, I went partying like anybody else, but I found it more uplifting to go to where I could be myself. I’d go to Heaven and love the ‘hands in the air’ freedom sounds.” he continues, “but I could never be accused of playing records for myself. As a DJ you are doing a job. You are there to entertain.”

Well - it just so happened that he lived and breathed the music, so this was in no way a chore. He loves to play for the people and that is exactly why he is known as ‘The People’s DJ”. He was also noted as one of the ‘40 most influential DJs over the last 40 years’ in an article for Blues & Soul Magazine. Written by Stretch who called him the ‘Kofi Annan of the soul scene’ because he effortlessly bridged the gap between the north and south. But Terry counts longevity as one of his biggest achievements. The fact that he can cross over to different scenes and is still being booked is a blessing.

And why wouldn’t he? He is the king of the cross over, in fact, many could still not pull that off. His sets are pockets of wonderful memories. He pulls you in on his unique ‘Terry Journey’ skilfully navigating a seamless spectrum of sounds, blending Soul, Rare Groove, Bossa, Jazz, and Soulful House into a tapestry that will leave nobody sitting down.

Terry sums up advice for Gen Z and beyond simply; “Be patient and respectful. Know your music, learn about soul music, house, ballads, and funk, and don’t get pigeonholed. Specialising in a little bit of modern soul has done well for me because it leads me to Soulful House. Everything I play is soulful. It’s gotta be soulful, it's gotta be big vocals.…and remember you are playing to an audience, so be passionate and enjoy yourself. People respond to DJs who enjoy themselves.”

Loved by many this is a man who never fails to deliver the set of all sets. Knowledge? Magic? I believe it’s a harmonious union of both and I for one am truly grateful for his passion, dedication, and unfailing love for his craft. Terry Jones is a pioneer and a legend, and he will continue to weave his musical magic at LIQUID SPIRIT Gozo this year plus, he celebrates 55 years in the business with an exclusive pop-up; Soul Food. It’s going to be special.
